I take it back...I DO have a holiday wish list Artwork. Specifically, I came up with a punny name for my ArtFire shop - Dragon Feats (draggin' feet...with handmade socks...shut up, I think it's funny) - and I want an image I can use for the banner and any business cards I might make up. Specifically, I want a goofy/cartoony green dragon, wearing a knit beanie cap and socks (one claw poking out of one sock like a big toe). I want him on the left, with maybe a rocky plain and sky to the right, so I can put "Dragon Feats - Hand Knit Socks, Slippers, Hats, and More" on the right part of the banner. The banner is 760x100, so I would crop the image down to just the feet and words for the banner, then use the head for the shop icon, and the whole image on business cards. ( Extremely quick and dirty images behind the cut. )So, any takers? :D |

About that ArtFire thing They want shop policies and a bio and stuff. -__- Y'all want to help me come up with those things, right? I strongly suspect you guys are better at bullshit know me better than I know myself. Not good at this whole "business" thing, no... Edit: If anyone can come up with a so-terribly-clever shop name, I'll happily create an account other than DragovianKnight over there. Current Mood: cold |

So I finally stopped flipping out long enough to remember what I read about giving permission. I gave myself permission to be crazy, and I gave the swirling worry permission to exist. Magic. Went from pacing to sitting down and finishing a sock to relatively functional calm. Not that this is a permanent change. But it's a lovely step in the process. Of course, not until I'd bombarded alh with too many emails, but she's gracious, so it was OK. I've been folding clothes and talking to myself, which may seem odd, but that's OK. It's helping. Later, I go get trained in PetCo's method of kitty care-taking for their contingent of CAT cats. Current Mood: moody |

We brought home a new member of the family today. We named him Mr Jangles. Don't asked me where that came from I have no idea. He is a ten year old Chihuahua. He was one of 5 others 3 puppies and this one and another tied up on the side of the road. We adopted him from the ASPCA yesterday. He looks to actually be in pretty good shape. He had some teeth pulled and a hernia taken care of, while at the shelter. He is very timid and getting acquainted with the Freckles and the other members of the house. |

Against all odds Despite the Pahrump-a-Pum-Pum festival being a HUGE CLUSTERFUCK that NOBODY KNEW ABOUT which was hidden behind a rinky-dink carnival with all of SIX RIDES, the final tally is that I sold $35 worth of hats and can now justify one of the three yarn orders I placed over the past three weeks. \o/ I am kind of considering an ArtFire shop for next year. I mean, I'm going to knit anyway; might as well clear out some of the finished objects and feed the yarn addiction.* *Unlike most knitters, I can't use the abbreviation FO, because I was a soaper first, and FO will always and forever mean fragrance oil to me. ETA 12/15/2009 10:47 AM: the code has now been rolled back and will not be pushed with the next codepush. synecdochic has chapter and verse here. Comments are frozen, I believe to the entire post. This is LJ-specific. NOT Dreamwidth. * Gender will be a mandatory field at LiveJournal account creation* LiveJournal is removing the Unspecified option for the gender field. That's right: you get to be male or female. Period. That's it. ( Source.) LJ is now saying "it didn't mean it" in various AmazonFaily ways, but if you want to register your displeasure (and convince them that -- unlike Amazon -- they should not try to sneak this change to LJ in later) go to Edit Profile on your LiveJournal account -- if you have one -- and select Unspecified for your gender option. Then, go to http://www.livejournal.com/contact/?dept=feedback and politely register your displeasure. POLITELY, boyz and grrlz, because the kiddies who read and process Feedback are not the people who make the decisions. They are often the people who are on the same side of the issue as you are and are yelling up the food-chain about the decisions. To also reach someone who's higher up the corporate ladder than the poor staff members who have to read and reply to Feedback, also email anjelika@livejournalinc.com -- Anjelika, GM of US operations. She's currently saying they never meant to make that part of Changelog go live at LJ's next codepush, so letting her know personally that it would make you very unhappy is a real plus. If she's on our side, it will give her ammunition. If she isn't, it will give her a headache... This entry is crossposted from http://ivorygates.dreamwidth.org/140310.html. have commented on it. Comments here are disabled. Please comment there using either your Dreamwidth account or OpenID. |

Oh. My. Gods. Guys, guys, knitting two socks at a time on one circular needle is the most awesome thing ever! I must have MOAR SOCK YARN and MOAR SOCK BOOKS! Edit: It shouldn't be any harder to convert instructions on two circular needles to two on one, than it is to convert instructions for DPNs to one circular, right? I mean, it's still a matter of dividing up the front/top and back/bottom stitches into groups. I ask because I'm considering going back to my copy of Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles (the book that nearly made me swear off socks) and knitting the kitty socks. Current Mood: excited |

I am having difficulty ( ramblings, not coherent, ignore )In saner news, my back isn't bad today. Standing around on cold asphalt over the weekend wasn't really good for it, so this is a win. I think Terminator Stout is much better for it than oxycodone--I can still walk around, and I'm not nauseated, and my back just relaxes. Oxycodone involves passing out and waking up shaped like a pretzel, with even more back pain. That just isn't right. We survived a total of eight hours of standing in the cold (two shifts, four hours each), working at the Holiday Express fundraiser for the Portland steam engines and their new home. The fun part was watching the 4449 in action. And I wore antlers. Frightened two dogs and three children. The wildlife refuge area on the other side of the train tracks is pond-like, and froze in the cold; yesterday, it attracted walkers, skaters, and few sleds. I was a little worried about that, as the temps were rising, but we didn't see anyone fall though the ice. (We were on the trail next to the train, warning bicyclists and runners of the traffic jam ahead during loading and unloading.) I could not have done a longer shift; as it was, when we got home Saturday, I staggered around and did a little laundry, and then fell asleep. Yesterday, I was wound up, so I didn't sleep in the afternoon, but I did crash early in the evening, after a lovely hot bath. OH!! There's a roller rink at the park where we were. I didn't know that, or I'd forgotten. I think I want to go skate! I wonder whether that skill comes back... I've been practicing doing the half-right thing, which actually led to some of the mess in the bedroom dwindling. It's not gone, but I think if I hadn't reminded myself, it would still all be a huge pile. Instead of a half-pile. ;-) It seems to be rewiring the thing in my head that's confused about time, just a bit. And now, after a brief bout of freaking out, I'm going to go eat, and then empty the dishwasher. No, I didn't really need to tell anyone that, but I want the record. If you weren't used to the boring you wouldn't be here. edited several times because I don't make sense Current Mood: hopeful |

Good bread, easy to make From allrecipes.com:
Kneadlessly Simple Easy Oat Bread:
5 1/2 cups unbleached all-pourpose white flour or bread flour, plus more as needed 1 1/4 cups old fashioned or quick oats (not instant oatmeal) 3 tablesppons granulated sugar 2 3/4 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon Fleischmann's RapidRise or Bread Machine yeast (I used regular Active Dry and it seemed fine) 1/4 cup honey or mild molasses 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 1/4 cups ice-cold water, plus more as needed
1. FIRST RISE: In a very large bowl, thoroughly mix flour, 1 cup oats, suga, salt and yeast. Stir together honey, oil and ice water in a separate bowl; add to dry ingredients and stir vigorously. If too dry, stir in just enough additional water to mix together; dough should be slightly stiff. If dough is very soft, stir in more flour to stiffen. Brush top of dough with oil (I used spray vegetable oil--works like a charm). Cover bowl with plastic wrap. For best flavor or convenience, refrigerate dough 3 to 10 hours; this is optional. Then let rise in a cool room 12 to 18 hours.
2. SECOND RISE: vigorously stir dough. If necessary, stir in enough additional flour to yield a hard-to-stir (elastic) consistency. Generously grease two 8 1/2 X 4 1/2 inch bread pans, making sure sides are greased the whole way to the top. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of oats in the bottom of each pan, shaking pan to distribute them evenly. Using oiled kitchen shears or a serrated knife, divide dough in half. Put half in each bread pan; with oiled fingers, smooth top of dough. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of oats over the top of each loaf, pressing it lightly to imbed it in the dough. Cover pans with greased plastic wrap.
3. LET RISE USING ANY OF THESE METHODS: For a 2 to 3 hour REGULAR RISE, let stand at wram room temperature; for a 45-minute to 2 hour FASTER RISE, put in a turned-off microwave with 1 cup boiling water; for SLOW RISE, refrigerate up to 24 hours, then put in a warm room. As dough nears plastic wrap, remove it; continue until dough is 1/2 inch above pan rim.
4. BAKING: Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 50-60 minutes, until tops are well browned. Cover with foil, bake 10-15 minutes more, until skewer inserted in center comes out with only a few particles on tip, or until center registers between 208 and 210 degrees. Bake five more minutes to be sure it's done. Cool 15 minutes in pan. Turn loaves onto rack to finish cooling.
5. SERVING/STORING: Best served at room temperature or toasted. Store airtight at room temperature three days; may be frozen, airtight, for up to two months.
The only faintly tricky thing with this recipe is figuring out when you want to eat the bread, then choosing the timing/rise methods to get you to that place. Very good--dense, moist brown loaf with a faint molasses flavor. I anticipate that it's going to make some kick-ass PB & J. |

Of interest perhaps Saw over at Massively.com that a place called the Virtual Worlds Observatory has a new study about the "perceptions of gender in online games and the reality behind it."
"Utilizing EverQuest II, the study uses a sample size of over 7,000 players to measure player interactions along gender lines and learn more about the gamers behind the keyboards. Surprisingly enough, while males exhibited predicted aggressiveness and achievement-oriented gameplay, it was the female gamers that exhibited more "hardcore" behavior. The top 10% of male gamers only played an average of 48 hours a week, while the top 10% of female gamers played an average of 56 hours a week. Yet, during the study, females under-reported their playing habits more than male gamers, as if unconsciously reacting to a stereotype."
Here's the study (Note: this is a PDF file). Current Mood: mellow |

Why didn't anyone TELL me? No one said New Moon was going to have half naked boys and giant CGI wolves! I was only expecting the wolves! (Actually, I was not expecting any Twilight-related werewolf to be half that cool.) So, where can I get the edit that is all half naked boys and CGI wolves, all the time? *shiver* The Pahrump-A-Pum-Pum Festival was absolutely dead. I was there for four hours freezing my ass off in the booth (shared by the store and two friends of Boss #1), and I was never, ever so glad to go back to the store as I was this afternoon. Tomorrow they're predicting rain; I hope I don't have to go back. *cries* Current Mood: cold |

'Tis the season! I will make Santa-hat icons for the first six folks who request one--two each from LJ, IJ and DW. All you have to do is comment to this post and provide me with a photo of your desired "hat-ee" to use as a base for the icon--a head and shoulders shot is about the best, but I'm open to others if you have a real favorite. Doesn't have to be a person--I've hatted birds and teddy bears in past seasons. You'll have your Santa-hat icon in time to use it this holiday season.
Merry whatever you're celebrating! |
